#18: What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candor, and more unashamed conversation. (IG)

Here’s how you can support someone who feels hopeless. Approach them with open-hearted curiosity. Ask questions in a way that lets them know you care. Be open to listening and respect that there may be things they don’t want to tell you or things you don’t need to know.Invite them to spend time with you so they feel less isolated and have positive experiences to look forward to. Don’t “should” on people – meaning don’t tell them what they “should” feel. Just practice listening and relating.

Take it seriously if they mention self-injury or suicide. Do not keep this a secret, even if they ask you to. Contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 800-273-8255 for guidance. If you believe your friend is in immediate danger, all 9-1-1.
