Introducing Saginaw Information System

Saginaw Information System

Navigate Services. Connect People. Improve Lives.

Saginaw’s unprecedented collaboration throughout COVID-19 has provided the partnership foundation needed to truly tackle our most urgent community-wide public health challenges.

At the same time, we know the best way to prevent, mitigate and prepare for any future events like COVID-19 is to work collaboratively to build a healthier Saginaw. If or when we experience the next wave or disease, Saginaw must be more resilient to experience less severe illness, lower hospitalization, and fewer deaths.

A shared community initiative called BWell Saginaw is the result.

Community Health Assessment Priorities

BWell Saginaw shines a spotlight on three significant health issues facing the people who live, learn, and work in Saginaw County:

Infant & Maternal Health

Maternal & Child Health

Infant & Maternal Health

Mental Health and
Substance Use

Infant & Maternal Health

Obesity & Chronic Disease

We encourage you to learn more, to start conversations in your organizations, businesses, churches, and neighborhoods, and to reach out to find ways to work together to improve the health of Saginaw County.

Download our report card and watch how we are working together.

Saginaw County faces serious health challenges, ranking among the least healthy counties in Michigan. Our health “report card” reveals many of our challenges:

BWell Saginaw Partner Coalition

These organizations work collaboratively to conduct a comprehensive community health assessment survey every three years. The partnership uses this data to create a relevant, data-driven community health improvement plan to address major priorities to improve health outcomes in Saginaw County.

Health Advisory Council

The Health Advisory Council (HAC) is designed to build and strengthen the capacity of the local Saginaw community to develop and deliver programs and services specifically to reach those who, despite our best efforts, are impacted disproportionately when it comes to healthcare – particularly the pandemic. Our priorities center around the impact of obesity & chronic disease, mental health & substance use, and pregnancy & infant mortality – our top three community health risks.

The council exists thanks in part to a $250,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services (MDHHS) Office of Equity and Minority Health (OEMH) in partnership with the Michigan Public Health Institute (MPHI). It is one of 11 across the state to address health disparities in underserved and rural populations. The HAC will work with a network of trusted community partners to improve gaps in healthcare.

To learn more about the lived experiences of the community, the HAC has coordinated public “discussion sessions” with African Americans, Latinos, Native Americans, rural and senior citizens, and women who have sought maternal infant care in the past three years. Leading that effort is Joyce Seals, former mayor of the City of Saginaw, who has been named project lead coordinator for the HAC.

For more information about the HAC, reach out directly to Seals at (989) 758-3801 or contact the health department by email at bwellsaginaw@saginawcounty.org.
